Additional Learning Needs (ALN)

At Coety Primary School, we value each pupil's uniqueness and individuality. We are committed to giving all our children every opportunity to achieve and be the best they can be. We understand that every pupil has different life experiences and needs and strive to actively seek to remove barriers to learning and support each pupil on their learning journey.

Equality of opportunity is important to us irrespective of ethnicity, attainment, age, disability, gender or background.

Every pupil's learning journey is tracked through our school using teacher and standardised assessments on a termly basis. We analyse individual progress. If a need is identified your child will be able to access different interventions provided by our skilled staff.

In line with a graduated response, if your child requires further support, we liaise with external agencies, such as specialist teachers and the school's link Educational Psychologist.

At Coety Primary School, the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNco) is Mrs. S. Davies, Deputy Headteacher.

Wales is currently in the process of an ALN Reform. Further information on this will be available soon from our Local Authority and the Welsh Government. In line with the Reform, very few children will be placed on the school's ALN register. Instead, schools will be expected to provide for the majority of learners through "universal provision" by adapting practice to meet the needs of all learners.

If your child needs support "above and beyond" what a school can offer, he/she will be placed on an ALN register and require an IDP. You will have the opportunity to work with us, your child and outside agencies to plan the best way forward.

More information on ALN within Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) can be found on their web page:

Jeremy Miles MS, Minister for Education and Welsh Language announced an extension relating to the ALN reform on 23.3.22.

"The ALN reform I have decided to extend the time available to move children during the first year of implementation by one year. This means that children who were due to move to the ALN system between January 2022 and August 2022, will now move to the ALN system between January 2022 and August 2023."
